Patterns and Sequences — Lesson
🌟 Let's Discover Patterns and Sequences! 🌟
1) Hook: The Magic Rangoli Story 🎨
In a small village in India, during Diwali, Meena loves making Rangoli designs. She places colorful dots in a special way:
First row: 1 dot
Second row: 3 dots
Third row: 5 dots
Fourth row: 7 dots...
Can you guess how many dots will be in the 5th row? Let's find out together by learning about Patterns and Sequences!
2) Core Concepts: What are Patterns and Sequences?
Pattern: A design or arrangement that repeats in a certain way.
Sequence: A list of numbers or objects arranged in a special order.
Let's look at Meena's Rangoli dots again:
| Row Number (n) | Number of Dots |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 |
| 2 | 3 |
| 3 | 5 |
| 4 | 7 |
See the pattern? The dots increase by 2 each time!
Another example: Look at these numbers:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ...
Each number is 2 more than the one before it. This is called an Arithmetic Sequence.
3) Key Formulas / Rules
Next number = Previous number + Common difference (d)
Example: 2, 5, 8, 11, ... (Here, d = 3)
Tn = a + (n - 1) × d
Where,
- a = first term
- d = common difference
- n = term number
Example: For 1, 3, 5, 7,... find 5th term
T5 = 1 + (5 - 1) × 2 = 1 + 8 = 9
4) Did You Know? 🤔
The famous Indian mathematician Pingala (around 200 BC) studied patterns in poetry and numbers! He used sequences to count rhythms, which is one of the earliest uses of sequences in history.
5) Exam Tips ✅
- Always check the common difference carefully. It can be positive or negative.
- Remember the formula for the nth term. Write it clearly in your answer.
- Look for real-life examples like steps, stairs, or flower petals to understand sequences better.
- Board questions often ask for the next few terms or the nth term. Practice both types.
- Common Mistake: Forgetting to subtract 1 in (n - 1) when using the formula.

1. PATTERN = Play And Think To Trace Every Repeating Number! 🔢
Remember, patterns help us find what comes next by playing and thinking about the numbers that repeat again and again!
-
2. Sequence Ka Formula: “Aage Badho, Step Samjho” 🚶♂️🚶♀️
In Hindi, it means "Move forward, understand the step." Every sequence has a step (difference or rule). Find it to know the next number!
-
3. Funny Acronym: S.N.A.K.E. 🐍

Explain the sequence!Just like a snake moves step by step, sequences move number by number!
