Amines — Lesson

1) Hook — The Chemistry Behind Your Morning Wake-Up Call

Imagine waking up in the morning and smelling a fresh cup of tea or coffee. The aroma that instantly energizes you comes from molecules containing nitrogen atoms — many of which are amines. Amines are not just classroom concepts; they are present in everyday life, from the caffeine in your tea to the neurotransmitters in your brain that keep you alert and happy!

2) Core Concepts — Understanding Amines

Amines are organic compounds derived from ammonia (NH3) by replacing one or more hydrogen atoms with alkyl or aryl groups.

Type of Amine General Formula Example
Primary (1°) Amine R–NH2 Methylamine (CH3NH2)
Secondary (2°) Amine R–NH–R' Dimethylamine (CH3NHCH3)
Tertiary (3°) Amine R–N–R'2 Trimethylamine ((CH3)3N)

Naming of Amines: The IUPAC name is derived by replacing the suffix -e of the parent alkane with -amine. For example, CH3CH2NH2 is ethanamine.

Physical Properties

  • Amines have higher boiling points than hydrocarbons of similar molecular mass due to hydrogen bonding (primary and secondary amines).
  • They are polar and soluble in water (especially lower molecular weight amines).

Chemical Properties

  • Basicity: Amines act as bases due to the lone pair on nitrogen.
  • Reaction with acids: Amines react with acids to form ammonium salts.
  • Hofmann’s Bromamide Reaction: Primary amides react with Br2 and NaOH to give primary amines with one less carbon.

Preparation Methods

Method Reaction Example
Reduction of Nitriles R–CN + 2[H] → R–CH2–NH2 CH3CN → CH3CH2NH2
Reduction of Nitro Compounds Ar–NO2 + 6[H] → Ar–NH2 + 2H2O Nitrobenzene → Aniline
Gabriel Phthalimide Synthesis Phthalimide + R–X → R–NH2 Used for primary amines

Important Reactions of Amines

  • Reaction with nitrous acid (HNO2):
    • Primary aliphatic amines form alcohols (via diazonium salts which decompose).
    • Primary aromatic amines form diazonium salts (stable at 0–5°C), important for azo dye synthesis.
  • Acylation: Amines react with acyl chlorides to form amides.

3) Key Formulas/Rules

Basicity order in aqueous solution:
Secondary amine > Primary amine > Tertiary amine > Ammonia

General formula of amines:
R–NH2 (1°), R–NH–R' (2°), R–N–R'2 (3°)

Hofmann Bromamide Reaction:
RCONH2 + Br2 + 4NaOH → RNH2 + Na2CO3 + 2NaBr + 2H2O

4) Did You Know?

Did you know? The characteristic fishy smell of many amines is due to trimethylamine, which is also responsible for the smell of Indian fish curry when it spoils! Interestingly, the human body produces small amounts of trimethylamine, but a rare genetic disorder called Trimethylaminuria causes a strong fishy odor due to its accumulation.

5) Exam Tips — Score High by Avoiding These Mistakes!

  • Don’t confuse the basicity order: Remember that in aqueous solution, secondary amines are generally more basic than primary due to solvation effects.
  • Write correct IUPAC names: Use the suffix -amine and number the chain so that the amine group gets the lowest possible number.
  • Practice reaction mechanisms: Focus on the Hofmann bromamide reaction and reactions with nitrous acid as these are frequently asked.
  • Previous Year Question Pattern:
    • Define amines and classify with examples. (1 mark)
    • Write the mechanism of Hofmann bromamide reaction. (3 marks)
    • Explain the reaction of primary aromatic amines with nitrous acid. (2 marks)
    • Compare the basicity of amines with ammonia. (2 marks)
  • Use diagrams: Drawing the structure of amines, reaction schemes, and resonance can fetch you extra marks.

Amines — Mnemonic

Mnemonic 1: Types of Amines (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary)

  • “PST = Pehla, Second, Third” – याद रखो: Primary = Pehla, Secondary = Second, Tertiary = Third amine.
  • Hindi rhyme: “Pehla amine, ek haath ka sign; Doosra amine, do haath milayein; Teesra amine, teen haath dikhayein!” 🤚🤚🤚

Mnemonic 2: Order of Basicity of Amines

  • “Secondary > Primary > Tertiary” याद रखने के लिए: “S-P-T” = “Samosa-Paneer-Tikki” 🍽️
  • Funny phrase: “Secondary amine is like Samosa – सबसे ज़्यादा पसंद!” 😄

Mnemonic 3: Naming Amines (IUPAC rules)

  • “Amines end with -amine, prefix with alkyl name”
  • Hindi trick: “Amines ka naam lagao, -amine zaroor lagao!” 😎
  • Example: CH3NH2 = Methylamine = “Methyl + amine”
