Demand — Lesson

1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Example

Imagine you walk into a popular Indian sweet shop during Diwali. You see laddoos priced at ₹50 per dozen. If the price suddenly drops to ₹30, you might decide to buy more than usual — maybe 3 dozen instead of 1. But if the price rises to ₹80, you might buy only half a dozen or skip altogether. This simple behavior shows how demand changes with price, a fundamental concept in Economics.

2) Core Concepts — What is Demand?

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at various prices during a given period of time.

Key Points:

  • Willingness to buy: Desire to purchase the good.
  • Ability to buy: Having the financial means.
  • Price factor: Demand depends on the price of the good.
  • Time period: Demand is measured over a specific time.

Law of Demand: Other things remaining constant (ceteris paribus), the quantity demanded of a good falls when its price rises, and rises when its price falls.

Demand Schedule and Demand Curve

A demand schedule is a table showing the quantity demanded at different prices.

Price of Laddoos (₹ per dozen) Quantity Demanded (dozen)
80 5
60 10
40 15
20 20

The demand curve is a graphical representation of the demand schedule. It slopes downward from left to right, showing the inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded.

Demand Curve

Figure: Downward sloping demand curve

3) Key Formulas / Rules

Law of Demand:

Price ↑ ⇒ Quantity Demanded ↓

Price ↓ ⇒ Quantity Demanded ↑

Price Elasticity of Demand (PED):

Formula:

PED = Percentage change in Quantity Demanded / Percentage change in Price

or

PED = (ΔQ / Q) ÷ (ΔP / P)

Where: ΔQ = Change in quantity demanded, Q = Initial quantity, ΔP = Change in price, P = Initial price.

4) Did You Know?

In India, the demand for gold often increases during festival seasons like Akshaya Tritiya and Diwali, despite its high price. This is because gold is considered an auspicious investment and a symbol of wealth, showing that sometimes cultural factors can influence demand beyond just price!

5) Exam Tips

  • Remember the ceteris paribus condition: When stating the law of demand, always mention “other things remain constant.”
  • Distinguish between demand and quantity demanded: Demand is the whole schedule or curve; quantity demanded is a point on it.
  • Practice drawing demand curves: Label axes properly — Price on Y-axis, Quantity Demanded on X-axis.
  • Be clear on shifts vs movements: Changes in price cause movements along the demand curve; changes in other factors (income, tastes) cause shifts.
  • Previous Year Question Pattern: Questions often ask for definitions, explanation of law of demand with diagram, difference between demand and quantity demanded, or factors affecting demand.
