Thermodynamics — Lesson

1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Example

Imagine you are at a roadside chaiwala in Delhi on a chilly winter morning. The tea is piping hot, served in a small clay cup called a kulhar. As you sip, you notice the tea gradually cools down, and the steam rises from the cup. Ever wondered what governs this heat transfer and how energy flows during this process? Welcome to the world of Thermodynamics — the branch of physics that studies heat, work, and energy transformations!

2) Core Concepts

What is Thermodynamics?
Thermodynamics is the study of the relationship between heat, work, and internal energy in physical systems.

Key Terms:

  • System: The part of the universe under study (e.g., the tea in the cup).
  • Surroundings: Everything outside the system.
  • Isolated System: No exchange of heat or work with surroundings.
  • Closed System: Exchange of energy but not matter.
  • Open System: Exchange of both energy and matter.

Thermodynamic Processes: These describe how a system changes from one state to another.

Process Description Example
Isothermal Temperature (T) remains constant. Slow compression of gas in a cylinder immersed in water.
Adiabatic No heat exchange (Q=0). Rapid compression of gas in a cylinder insulated from surroundings.
Isobaric Pressure (P) remains constant. Boiling water at atmospheric pressure.
Isochoric Volume (V) remains constant. Heating gas in a sealed rigid container.

First Law of Thermodynamics:
It is a statement of conservation of energy for thermodynamic systems.

ΔU = Q - W

Where:
ΔU = Change in internal energy of the system
Q = Heat supplied to the system (positive if added)
W = Work done by the system on surroundings (positive if done by system)

Internal Energy (U): Total microscopic kinetic and potential energy of particles in the system.
For an ideal gas, internal energy depends only on temperature:
U = (3/2) nRT (for monoatomic ideal gas)

3) Key Formulas/Rules

  • First Law of Thermodynamics: ΔU = Q - W
  • Work done in Isothermal Process (Ideal Gas): W = nRT ln(Vf/Vi)
  • Work done in Adiabatic Process: W = (P2V2 - P1V1) / (γ - 1), where γ = Cp/Cv
  • Internal Energy of Monoatomic Ideal Gas: U = (3/2) nRT
  • Relation between Cp and Cv: Cp - Cv = R
  • Efficiency of Heat Engine: η = (W / Qh) × 100%

4) Did You Know?

The Kelvin scale of temperature, used in thermodynamics, is named after Lord Kelvin, a British physicist who was inspired by Indian philosophy's concept of absolute zero — a state of no thermal motion. Interestingly, the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore played a key role in early thermodynamics research in India!

5) Exam Tips

  • Common Mistake: Confusing signs of Q and W. Remember, Q is positive when heat is added to the system, and W is positive when work is done by the system.
  • Board Pattern: Questions often ask to apply the first law in various processes (isothermal, adiabatic, isobaric, isochoric) with numerical problems involving calculation of work, heat, or change in internal energy.
  • Derivations: Be thorough with derivations of work done in isothermal and adiabatic processes; these are frequently asked.
  • Graph Interpretation: Understand P-V and T-S diagrams for different processes; questions may ask you to identify processes from graphs.
  • Units: Always use SI units: Energy in Joules (J), Pressure in Pascal (Pa), Volume in cubic meters (m³), Temperature in Kelvin (K).
