1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention

Imagine you are watching the thrilling final match of the IPL. Your favourite batsman, say Virat Kohli, is on strike. The commentator says, "He must hit a six to win the match!" But then, your friend says, "He might get out if he takes a risky shot."

Here, words like must and might are helping us express certainty and possibility. These special words are called Modals — and today, we will learn all about them!

2) Core Concepts — What are Modals?

Modals are helping verbs that express ability, possibility, permission, obligation, or advice. They are always used with the base form of the main verb (without 'to').

Modal Meaning / Use Example
Can Ability / Permission / Possibility She can speak Hindi fluently.
Could Past ability / Polite permission / Possibility He could swim when he was 5.
May Permission / Possibility You may leave early today.
Might Possibility (less certain than may) It might rain this evening.
Must Obligation / Strong certainty You must wear a helmet while riding a bike.
Shall Future action (formal) / Offer I shall help you with your homework.
Should Advice / Recommendation You should eat more vegetables.
Will Future action / Promise She will come to the party.
Would Polite request / Hypothetical situations Would you like some tea?

3) Key Formulas / Rules

Rule 1: Modals are always followed by the base form of the verb (without 'to').

Example: She can dance. (Correct)
She can to dance. (Incorrect)

Rule 2: Modals do not change form according to the subject.

Example: I must study.
He must study.

Rule 3: Modals do not have past or future forms (except could, would, shall, will).

Example: She can swim. (Present ability)
She could swim when young. (Past ability)

Rule 4: To make negatives, add not after the modal.

Example: He must not be late.

4) Did You Know?

In Bollywood dialogues, modals are used to create drama and emotion! For example, in the famous movie “3 Idiots”, Rancho says, "You must chase excellence, and success will follow." Here, must shows a strong obligation and advice.

Also, in cricket commentary, modals like might, could, and should are often used to predict what could happen next, making the game more exciting!

5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes & Board Exam Patterns

  • Common Mistake: Using to after modals. Remember, always use the base verb without 'to'.
    Wrong: She can to swim.
    Right: She can swim.
  • Common Mistake: Changing modal form according to subject. Modals remain the same for all subjects.
  • Board Exam Pattern: You may get fill-in-the-blanks, sentence correction, or rewriting sentences using modals.
  • Tip: Practice writing sentences using different modals to express ability, permission, advice, and obligation.
  • Example Question: Fill in the blank with the correct modal:
