Practical Geometry — Lesson

1) Hook — Geometry on the Cricket Field!

Imagine you are at a cricket stadium watching your favourite team play. The bowler runs towards the pitch and delivers the ball. The umpire stands at a specific point to judge if the ball is a no-ball or not. The fielders are placed at certain positions forming triangles and angles to catch the ball effectively.

Did you know that the positions of players and the pitch markings are all about practical geometry? Today, we will learn how to use simple tools like a ruler and compass to draw accurate shapes and figures, just like the cricket field is laid out!

2) Core Concepts — What is Practical Geometry?

Practical Geometry is the art and science of drawing geometric shapes using instruments such as a ruler, compass, protractor, and set squares. Instead of just reading about shapes, you learn to construct them precisely.

Why is Practical Geometry important?
  • Helps in making accurate drawings and designs.
  • Used in architecture, engineering, and even art.
  • Builds a strong foundation for understanding shapes, angles, and measurements.

Basic Tools Used:

Tool Purpose Example Use
Ruler Measure and draw straight lines Draw side of a triangle 7 cm long
Compass Draw arcs and circles Draw a circle with radius 5 cm
Protractor Measure and draw angles Draw an angle of 60°

Example: Constructing a Triangle Given Three Sides (SSS)

Suppose you want to draw a triangle with sides 5 cm, 6 cm, and 7 cm.

  • Step 1: Draw the base of 7 cm using a ruler.
  • Step 2: With the compass, draw an arc of radius 5 cm from one end of the base.
  • Step 3: Draw another arc of radius 6 cm from the other end of the base.
  • Step 4: The point where these arcs intersect is the third vertex of the triangle.
  • Step 5: Join this point to both ends of the base to complete the triangle.

3) Key Formulas/Rules

Rule 1: Triangle Inequality Theorem

For any triangle with sides a, b, and c:

a + b > c,    b + c > a,    c + a > b

This means the sum of lengths of any two sides must be greater than the third side.

Rule 2: Using Compass for Arcs

To draw an arc or circle with radius r:

Set compass width = r cm

Place the compass needle on the center point and rotate to draw the arc or full circle.

Rule 3: Constructing Angles

To construct an angle of x degrees:

  • Use a protractor to mark the angle from a baseline.
  • Join the marked point to the vertex to form the angle.

4) Did You Know?

In ancient India, the great mathematician Bhaskara II (12th century) used practical geometry to solve problems related to astronomy and construction. The Sulbasutras, ancient Indian texts, contain detailed instructions on how to construct altars with precise geometric shapes using only ropes and stakes — a form of practical geometry!

5) Exam Tips

  • Always label your diagrams clearly: Mark all points, sides, and angles as per the question.
  • Use sharp pencils and clean instruments: Smudged or inaccurate lines can lose marks.
  • Follow the construction steps carefully: For example, when drawing arcs with a compass, keep the width fixed until the step is complete.
  • Remember the triangle inequality: Check if the given sides can form a triangle before starting construction.
  • Practice common constructions: Such as triangle by SSS, SAS, constructing perpendicular bisectors, and angles of 60°, 90°, etc.
  • Board exam pattern: Questions often require you to construct a triangle or an angle with given measurements and write the steps clearly.

“Geometry is not just about shapes, it’s about understanding the world around us — from cricket fields to ancient temples!”
