Paragraph and Essay Writing — Lesson

1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention

Imagine you are at a cricket match between India and Australia at the famous Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. You want to tell your friend about the exciting match, the sixes hit by Virat Kohli, and the cheer of the crowd. But how do you do it clearly so your friend feels like they were there too? That’s where paragraph and essay writing come in handy! Writing is like being a storyteller — you share your thoughts in an organized way, just like a commentator describes the cricket match ball by ball.

2) Core Concepts — What is Paragraph and Essay Writing?

Paragraph Writing is writing a group of sentences about one main idea. Think of it as a small chapter in your story. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic.

Essay Writing is writing several paragraphs together to explain a bigger topic. An essay usually has three parts:

Part Description Example Topic: "My Favourite Festival"
Introduction Introduce the topic and catch reader’s attention. “Diwali is one of the most colourful and joyful festivals in India.”
Body Explain the main points with details. “People decorate their homes with lights and burst crackers. We also prepare sweets like laddoos and barfis.”
Conclusion Summarize and give a final thought. “Diwali brings happiness and unites families, making it my favourite festival.”

3) Key Formulas / Rules for Paragraph and Essay Writing

Rule 1: Start with a clear topic sentence that tells what the paragraph is about.

Rule 2: Use supporting sentences to explain or give examples.

Rule 3: End with a concluding sentence that summarizes the paragraph.

Rule 4: Keep paragraphs 5-7 sentences long for clarity.

Rule 5: For essays, organize paragraphs logically: Introduction → Body → Conclusion.

Formula for a Good Paragraph:

Topic Sentence + Supporting Sentences + Concluding Sentence

4) Did You Know? — Fun Fact About Writing

The famous Bollywood scriptwriter Javed Akhtar once said that writing a good script is like writing a perfect essay — it needs a strong beginning, interesting middle, and satisfying end to keep the audience hooked! So, even your essay writing skills can help you become a great storyteller like Bollywood legends.

5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes and Board Exam Patterns

  • Avoid writing very short or very long paragraphs. Stick to 5-7 sentences per paragraph.
  • Don’t forget the introduction and conclusion. They give your essay a clear start and finish.
  • Use simple and clear language. Avoid complicated words just to sound fancy.
  • Check spelling and punctuation. Mistakes can reduce your marks.
  • Board exam pattern: Usually, you get 5-8 marks for paragraph writing and 10-15 marks for essay writing in Class 6 English exams.
  • Practice writing on common topics: My School, My Favourite Sport, A Festival I Like, Importance of Trees, etc.

Remember, writing is like batting in cricket — practice makes perfect! The more you write, the better your “runs” (marks) will be in the exam.
