Verbs and Tenses — Lesson

1) Hook — A Cricket Match Story

Imagine you're watching the thrilling final of the IPL (Indian Premier League). The batsman runs between the wickets, the bowler throws the ball, and the crowd cheers loudly. These action words like runs, throws, and cheers are called verbs. They tell us what is happening right now, what happened before, or what will happen next. Just like the cricket match has different moments, verbs change their form to show time — this is called tenses. Let's learn how verbs and tenses make our sentences lively and clear!

2) Core Concepts — Verbs and Tenses Explained

What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that shows an action, occurrence, or state of being. For example:

  • Action: She plays cricket.
  • Occurrence: It rains in monsoon.
  • State of Being: He is happy.

What are Tenses?
Tenses tell us when the action happens. There are three main tenses:

  • Present Tense: Action happening now or regularly.
  • Past Tense: Action that happened before.
  • Future Tense: Action that will happen later.

Each tense has different forms. Let's see examples with the verb "to play" (like playing cricket!):

Tense Example Sentence
Present Simple He plays cricket every Sunday.
Past Simple He played cricket yesterday.
Future Simple He will play cricket tomorrow.

There are also continuous and perfect tenses, but for Class 6, focus on simple tenses first.

3) Key Formulas/Rules

Present Simple Tense:
Subject + base verb (add 's' or 'es' for he/she/it)

Past Simple Tense:
Subject + verb + 'ed' (for regular verbs)
(Irregular verbs change form: play → played, go → went)

Future Simple Tense:
Subject + will + base verb

4) Did You Know?

The verb "to be" is the most special verb in English! It changes into am, is, are, was, were depending on the tense and subject. For example, in the Bollywood movie 3 Idiots, Rancho says, "I am a student" (present), but if he talked about yesterday, he would say, "I was a student."

5) Exam Tips

  • Watch the Subject: For he/she/it, add 's' or 'es' in present tense. Example: She runs, not She run.
  • Past Tense Spelling: Add 'ed' for regular verbs, but remember irregular verbs (go → went, eat → ate).
  • Future Tense: Always use will + base verb. Example: They will watch a movie.
  • Common Mistake: Don’t mix tenses in one sentence. If you start in past tense, keep it consistent.
  • Exam Pattern: Questions may ask you to fill in blanks with correct verb form, identify tenses, or rewrite sentences in a different tense.
