Metals and Non-metals — Complete Lesson

?? Physical Properties of Metals vs Non-metals

PropertyMetalsNon-metals
LustreShiny ?Dull (except iodine, diamond)
HardnessHard (except Na, K)Soft (except diamond)
MalleabilityCan be beaten into sheetsBrittle
ConductivityGood conductorsPoor (except graphite)
StateSolid (except mercury)Solid/Liquid/Gas
?? Bollywood Analogy: Metals are like Bollywood superstars — shiny, tough, conduct (energy to audiences), and can be shaped into any role. Non-metals are like indie artists — varied, unique, sometimes brittle but include diamonds (the most precious)!

? Reactivity Series

Metals arranged in decreasing order of reactivity:

K > Na > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Ni > Sn > Pb > [H] > Cu > Hg > Ag > Au > Pt

?? Extraction of Metals

  • Low reactivity (Cu, Ag): Roasting/reduction with heat
  • Medium reactivity (Fe, Zn): Reduction with carbon (coke)
  • High reactivity (Na, K, Al): Electrolytic reduction

??? Corrosion and Prevention

Corrosion: Metals slowly get eaten away by air, moisture, and acids. Iron rusting (Fe2O3) is the most common example.

Prevention: Painting, oiling, galvanising (zinc coating), alloying, electroplating.
