Imagine you are at the famous Gateway of India in Mumbai with your friends. You want to find out how tall the monument is without climbing it. You have a protractor and a measuring tape. By measuring the angle from where you stand to the top of the monument and knowing your distance from it, you can calculate its height using trigonometry! Just like how cricket players calculate the perfect angle to hit a six, trigonometry helps us understand angles and distances in the real world.

2) Core Concepts — What is Trigonometry?

Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with the relationships between the sides and angles of triangles, especially right-angled triangles.

In a right-angled triangle, one angle is always 90°. The side opposite this angle is called the hypotenuse, and the other two sides are called the adjacent and opposite sides relative to an angle.

Example: In a cricket stadium, if a fielder sees the ball at an angle of 30° above the ground and is standing 20 meters away from the batsman, trigonometry helps calculate the height of the ball.

Sine, Cosine, and Tangent Ratios:

  • sin θ = Opposite / Hypotenuse
  • cos θ = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
  • tan θ = Opposite / Adjacent

These ratios help us find unknown sides or angles in right-angled triangles.

Remember: The hypotenuse is always the longest side, so it is never used as the adjacent or opposite side.

The ancient Indian mathematician Aryabhata (born in 476 CE) was one of the first to use trigonometric concepts! He created tables of sine values called “Jya” and “Koti Jya”, which are the ancestors of today's sine and cosine functions.   • Check units: If the question involves meters or centimeters, keep units consistent before final answers.
  • Board exam pattern: Expect questions like finding the height of a tower, length of a ladder leaning against a wall, or angles of elevation/depression.
