1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention

Imagine you are at a cricket match watching your favourite Indian team play. The bowler is about to bowl the next ball. You wonder, “What are the chances that the batsman will hit a six?” Is it 50-50? Or maybe less? This question is all about probability — the chance or likelihood of something happening. Just like in cricket, probability helps us predict outcomes in everyday life, from weather forecasts to deciding which Bollywood movie might be a blockbuster!

2) Core Concepts — What is Probability?

Probability is a number between 0 and 1 that tells us how likely an event is to happen.

  • Probability = 0 means the event will never happen.
  • Probability = 1 means the event will always happen.
  • Anything in between 0 and 1 shows the chance of the event happening.

Example 1: Tossing a fair coin. What is the probability of getting a head?

Possible Outcomes Favourable Outcomes (Head)
Head, Tail (2 outcomes) Head (1 outcome)

So, Probability of Head = Number of favourable outcomes / Total number of outcomes = 1/2 = 0.5.

Example 2: You have a bag with 5 red balls and 3 green balls. What is the probability of picking a green ball?

Total Balls Green Balls (Favourable)
5 + 3 = 8 3

Probability of green ball = 3/8 = 0.375

3) Key Formulas/Rules

Probability of an event (E) happening = Number of favourable outcomes ÷ Total number of possible outcomes

Sum of probabilities of all possible outcomes = 1

Probability of event not happening = 1 − Probability of event happening

4) Did You Know?

In the famous Bollywood movie Lagaan, the villagers had to win a cricket match against the British to avoid paying taxes. The probability of winning was very low because the villagers were new to cricket! This shows how probability can be used to understand chances in real-life games and challenges.

5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes & Board Exam Patterns

  • Always count total outcomes carefully: For example, when rolling a die, there are 6 outcomes, not 5 or 7.
  • Don’t forget to identify favourable outcomes: For example, when asked for “even numbers” on a die, favourable outcomes are 2, 4, 6 — total 3.
  • Probability must be between 0 and 1: If your answer is greater than 1 or negative, check your calculation again.
  • Board exam questions often ask: “Find the probability of ...” or “What is the chance that ...” so practice writing answers as fractions, decimals, or percentages.
  • Use simple fractions for answers: For example, 1/2 instead of 0.5 unless decimal is specifically asked.

Probability — Mnemonic

Mnemonic 1: PROBABILITY = "P.R.O.B. = Possible Results Of Ball" 🏏

  • P = Possible outcomes (like runs scored in a cricket ball)
  • R = Required event (like scoring a boundary)
  • O = Outcomes total (all possible runs: 0,1,2,3,4,6)
  • B = Ball or trial (one chance given to batsman)

Remember: Probability = Required outcomes ÷ Possible outcomes! Just like counting how many ways a batsman can hit a four out of all possible runs.

Mnemonic 2: Probability Formula in Hindi Rhyme 🎤

"Jo ho sakta, wahi hai chance,
Jo chahiye, uska hai dance,
Sabhi outcomes ko gino yaar,
Divide karo, milegi baar-baar!"

Translation: The possible event is the chance, the desired event is the dance, count all outcomes my friend, divide and get the answer in the end!

Mnemonic 3: PROBABILITY Acronym - "P.A.R.T.Y" 🎉

  • P = Possible outcomes (sabhi possible results)
  • A = Actual event (jo chahiye)
  • R = Ratio (humein nikalna hai)
  • T = Total trials (total chances)
  • Y = Your answer (final probability!)

Think of probability like a cricket party where you count all runs, pick your favorite, and find the chance of it happening!
