Perimeter and Area — Lesson

🌟 Let's Explore Perimeter and Area! 🌟

1) Hook — A Fun Story from India 🇮🇳

Imagine you are helping your grandmother in her beautiful garden in Kerala. She wants to put a fence all around the garden to keep the playful monkeys away! 🐒

To buy the right amount of fence, you need to know how long the fence should be. This is called finding the perimeter of the garden.

Also, your grandmother wants to plant grass inside the garden. To know how much grass seed to buy, you need to find the area of the garden.

Let’s learn how to find the perimeter and area, so you can help your grandmother! 🌿

2) Core Concepts — What are Perimeter and Area?

Perimeter is the total distance around a shape. Think of it as the length of the fence needed.

Area is the amount of space inside the shape. It tells us how much grass seed to buy.

Example 1: Rectangle Garden

Your garden is a rectangle. It is 8 meters long and 5 meters wide.

Length (l) Width (w)
8 m 5 m

Perimeter = Add all sides = l + w + l + w

= 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 meters

Area = Length × Width = 8 × 5 = 40 square meters

So, you need 26 meters of fence and enough grass seed for 40 square meters.

Example 2: Square Flower Bed

A square flower bed has a side of 4 meters.

Perimeter = 4 × side = 4 × 4 = 16 meters

Area = side × side = 4 × 4 = 16 square meters

3) Key Formulas / Rules

Perimeter of Rectangle = 2 × (Length + Width)

Area of Rectangle = Length × Width

Perimeter of Square = 4 × Side

Area of Square = Side × Side

4) Did You Know? 🤔

In India, the famous Taj Mahal has beautiful gardens with perfect shapes! The gardeners use perimeter and area to plan the fences and flower beds. 🌸

5) Exam Tips ✅

  • Always write units (meters, cm) with your answers.
  • Remember: Perimeter is a length, so unit is meters (m).
  • Area is space, so unit is square meters (m²).
  • Don’t forget to add all sides for perimeter carefully.
  • Check if the shape is rectangle or square before using formulas.
  • Practice drawing shapes to understand sides better.
