1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Example

Imagine you are helping your school’s sports captain analyze the performance of the cricket team. You collect data about the number of runs scored by each player in the last 10 matches. How can you organize this data to find out who is the most consistent player? This is where Statistics comes in — it helps us collect, organize, and interpret data to make meaningful decisions.

2) Core Concepts

Statistics is the branch of mathematics that deals with collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting data.

Types of Data:

  • Raw Data: Data collected in original form (e.g., runs scored by players: 25, 40, 10, 55...)
  • Grouped Data: Data organized into classes or intervals (e.g., runs scored grouped as 0-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc.)

Organizing Data: Data can be organized using frequency distribution tables to show how often each value or group occurs.

Runs Scored (Class Interval) Number of Matches (Frequency)
0 - 10 3
11 - 20 2
21 - 30 4
31 - 40 1

Measures of Central Tendency: These are values that represent the center or average of the data.

  • Mean (Average): Sum of all observations divided by number of observations.
  • Median: The middle value when data is arranged in ascending order.
  • Mode: The value that occurs most frequently.

Example: Runs scored by a player in 7 matches: 12, 25, 18, 12, 30, 25, 12

  • Arrange data: 12, 12, 12, 18, 25, 25, 30
  • Mean = (12 + 12 + 12 + 18 + 25 + 25 + 30) / 7 = 134 / 7 ≈ 19.14
  • Median = 4th value = 18
  • Mode = 12 (occurs 3 times)

3) Key Formulas / Rules

Mean (Average):

Mean = ∑f x / ∑f

Where, f = frequency, x = value of observation

Median (for grouped data):

Median = l + (n/2 - F) × h / f

Where,

  • l = lower boundary of median class
  • n = total frequency
  • F = cumulative frequency before median class
  • h = class width
  • f = frequency of median class

Mode (for grouped data):

Mode = l + (f₁ - f₀) × h / ((f₁ - f₀) + (f₁ - f₂))

Where,

  • l = lower boundary of modal class
  • f₁ = frequency of modal class
  • f₀ = frequency of class before modal class
  • f₂ = frequency of class after modal class
  • h = class width

4) Did You Know?

India’s Census, conducted every 10 years, is one of the largest statistical exercises in the world! The 2011 Census collected data from over 1.2 billion people to help the government plan resources and development.

5) Exam Tips

  • Always arrange data in ascending order before finding median or mode.
  • For grouped data, calculate cumulative frequency carefully to identify median class.
  • Check class intervals for continuity (e.g., 10-19, 20-29) to avoid gaps or overlaps.
  • Write units clearly (e.g., runs, marks) wherever applicable.
  • Common questions: Frequency distribution tables, calculating mean, median, mode from raw and grouped data.
  • Practice drawing bar graphs or histograms as they often accompany statistics questions.

🎯 Mnemonics for Statistics (IGCSE Class 9) 🎯

  • Mean, Median, Mode – “M3 Magic” 🧙‍♂️
    Mnemonic:
    Mean = “Add All, Divide Total” (Sum ÷ Number)
    Median = “Middle Number, Arrange Pehle” (Sort first)
    Mode = “Most Frequent, Sabse Zyada”

    Hindi rhyme to remember:
    “Sabko jodo, bhaag do, mean milega yeh hi to!
    Beech wala number median ka hero,
    Jo sabse zyada aaye, mode hai zero!”

  • 📊 Statistics Formula Order – “SOME” Rule
    Mnemonic:
    Sum of observations
    Order the data (for median)
    Mean = Sum ÷ n
    Extract mode (most frequent)

    Remember it as “SOME” – Always do SOME work before answering!

  • Hindi Funny Phrase for Types of Data 📋
    Mnemonic:
    “संकलित (Collected) डेटा में दो राजा – निरंतर और असतत”
    “Continuous data hai smooth, jaise नदिया ka flow,
    Discrete data hai jumpy, jaise meter ka show!”

    Translation: Continuous data flows smoothly like a river, discrete data jumps like meter readings.
