Forces — Lesson
1) Hook — The Cricket Ball Mystery!
Imagine you’re at a cricket match cheering for your favourite player, say Virat Kohli. When he hits the ball, have you ever wondered what makes the ball fly so fast and far? It’s all about forces! The force from the bat pushes the ball, making it zoom through the air. Forces are everywhere — from pushing your school bag to pulling the rickshaw. Let’s discover the magic behind these invisible pushes and pulls!
2) Core Concepts — What Are Forces?
Force is a push or a pull that can change the state of motion of an object. It can make things start moving, stop, speed up, slow down, or change direction.
| Type of Force | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Push | Pushing a school bench | Moves the bench forward |
| Pull | Pulling a rickshaw | Moves the rickshaw towards you |
| Friction | Sliding a book on a table | Slows down the book |
| Gravity | Dropping a mango from a tree | Pulls the mango down to the ground |
Remember: Forces have both magnitude (how strong) and direction. They are vector quantities!
3) Key Formulas/Rules
Force (F) = Mass (m) × Acceleration (a)
Where,
- Force (F) is measured in Newtons (N)
- Mass (m) is measured in kilograms (kg)
- Acceleration (a) is measured in meters per second squared (m/s²)
For example, if a cricket ball of mass 0.16 kg is accelerated at 10 m/s² by a bat, the force applied is:
F = 0.16 × 10 = 1.6 N
Newton’s First Law of Motion: An object will remain at rest or move at a constant speed in a straight line unless acted upon by a force.
Example: A stationary cricket ball won’t move until the batsman hits it.
4) Did You Know?
In the famous Bollywood movie “Lagaan”, the villagers use a huge force to hit the cricket ball over a long distance to win the match against the British! The force applied by the batsman’s swing and the friction between the ball and air decide how far the ball will travel. So, even Bollywood heroes rely on physics!
5) Exam Tips
- Don’t confuse force with energy. Force is a push or pull, energy is the ability to do work.
- Always include units. For force, write Newton (N), for mass kg, for acceleration m/s².
- Understand vector nature. Forces have direction — mention it if asked.
- Practice numerical problems. Use F = m × a carefully.
- Board exam pattern: Questions may ask for definitions, examples of forces, effects of forces, or simple calculations.
- Common mistake: Forgetting that friction opposes motion — it always acts opposite to the direction of movement.

Forces — Mnemonic
Mnemonic 1: FORCE 🏏 - The Cricket Power!
- F - Friction (जमीन पे रगड़, ball को रोके)
- O - Opposite Push or Pull
- R - Reaction (जब गेंद बल्ले से टकराए)
- C - Centripetal Force (गेंद घुमाओ, spin करो)
- E - Elastic Force (बॉल की उछाल, जैसे बॉल वापस आए)
Friction Opposes Running Cricket Energetically!” 🏏
(Family of Forces) 👪
Mnemonic 3: FORCE
