Statistics — Lesson

1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention

Imagine your favourite cricket team, India, just finished a thrilling match in the IPL. The captain wants to know which player scored the most runs in the last 5 matches. To do this, the team manager collects the runs scored by each player and arranges the data to find the average, the highest, and the most common scores. This is Statistics in action — helping us understand and make decisions based on numbers!

2) Core Concepts — What is Statistics?

Statistics is the branch of mathematics that deals with collecting, organizing, presenting, analysing, and interpreting data. It helps us turn raw numbers into meaningful information.

Let's understand some important terms with an example:

Player Runs scored in last 5 matches
Virat Kohli 45, 60, 30, 70, 55
Rohit Sharma 50, 40, 65, 80, 45

Data: The collection of numbers (runs scored) is called data. Here, the runs scored by each player in each match are the data points.

Organising Data: Data can be organised in tables or charts to make it easier to understand.

Presentation: We can present data using bar graphs, pie charts, or frequency tables.

Example: Frequency Table of Runs Scored by Virat Kohli

Runs Frequency (Number of Matches)
30 1
45 1
55 1
60 1
70 1

This table shows how many times Virat scored each number of runs in the last 5 matches.

3) Key Formulas/Rules

Mean (Average): The sum of all data values divided by the number of values.

Formula: Mean = (Sum of all observations) ÷ (Number of observations)

Median: The middle value when data is arranged in ascending or descending order.

If there are two middle values, median is the average of those two.

Mode: The value that appears most frequently in the data set.

Example: Calculate Mean, Median, and Mode of Rohit Sharma’s Runs

Runs scored: 50, 40, 65, 80, 45

  • Mean: (50 + 40 + 65 + 80 + 45) ÷ 5 = 280 ÷ 5 = 56
  • Median: Arrange in order: 40, 45, 50, 65, 80 → Middle value is 50
  • Mode: No number repeats, so no mode.

4) Did You Know?

The famous Indian mathematician Bhāskara II (12th century) made early contributions to statistics by studying patterns and averages in astronomy! So, statistics is not just modern but has deep roots in Indian history.

5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes & Board Exam Patterns

  • Always arrange data in order when finding the median.
  • Check if the data set has a mode — sometimes there is no mode or more than one mode.
  • Calculate the mean carefully by adding all numbers correctly and dividing by the right count.
  • Practice drawing frequency tables and bar graphs — these are commonly asked in exams.
  • Remember units and labels in tables and graphs for clarity.
  • Board exam pattern: Questions often ask for mean, median, mode, and interpretation of data tables or charts.

  • S.T.A.T.I.S.T.I.C.SSimple Trick Always To Interpret Stats In Cool Style 🎯
Use this to remember the word “Statistics” itself and what it’s about — interpreting data smartly!

  • Hindi Rhyming Phrase:
“Data ko samjho, mean median mode ko pakdo, graph bana ke sabko dikha do!” 📈😄
Translation: Understand the data, catch mean, median, mode, make a graph and show everyone!
This fun rhyme helps students remember the key statistical tools and the importance of visualization.

  • Cricket Analogy Acronym: M.O.D.EMost Often Data's Essence 🏏
Just like a cricket player’s “mode” of scoring (most frequent runs), mode in statistics is the value that appears most often in data.
Remember: M.O.D.E = Most Often Data's Essence (the most frequent value in your data set).
