1) Hook — The Tale of India’s Growing Cities

Imagine the bustling streets of Mumbai — over 20 million people live there! Every day, thousands of people move to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru in search of jobs and better lives. But have you ever wondered how such huge populations affect resources like water, housing, and schools? This story of India’s growing population and urbanisation helps us understand the challenges and opportunities of population geography.

2) Core Concepts — Understanding Population

Population is the total number of people living in a particular area, such as a country, state, or city.

Population Density tells us how crowded a place is. It is the number of people living per square kilometre (km2).

Country Population (millions) Area (km2) Population Density (people/km2)
India 1400 3,287,263 426
Australia 25 7,692,024 3

Population Growth is the increase in the number of people over time. It depends on:

  • Birth Rate: Number of births per 1000 people per year.
  • Death Rate: Number of deaths per 1000 people per year.
  • Migration: Movement of people in (immigration) or out (emigration) of an area.

Age Structure shows the percentage of people in different age groups — young (0-14 years), working age (15-59 years), and elderly (60+ years). India has a large young population, which is called a demographic dividend.

3) Key Formulas/Rules

Population Density = Total Population ÷ Area (km2)

Natural Increase Rate = Birth Rate − Death Rate

Total Population Growth = Natural Increase + Net Migration

4) Did You Know?

India is expected to become the most populous country in the world by 2027, overtaking China! Despite its huge population, India’s fertility rate has been steadily declining due to better education and family planning.

5) Exam Tips

  • Remember units: Population density is always in people per square kilometre (people/km2).
  • Don’t confuse natural increase with total growth: Migration affects total population but not natural increase.
  • Use Indian examples: Mention cities like Mumbai, Delhi, or states like Uttar Pradesh for population density or growth questions.
  • Practice diagrams: Age structure pyramids are commonly asked. Know how to interpret or draw them.
  • Common question types: Definitions, calculation of density, explanation of population growth factors, and case studies on India’s population.
