Sequences — Lesson

1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Example

Imagine you are helping your grandmother arrange marigold flowers for the famous Indian festival of Diwali. She asks you to place flowers in a line such that the number of flowers in each row increases by 3 every time — starting with 3 flowers in the first row, then 6 in the second, 9 in the third, and so on. You have just created a sequence! Sequences help us understand patterns in daily life, from arranging flowers to saving money regularly.

2) Core Concepts — What Are Sequences?

A sequence is an ordered list of numbers following a specific pattern. Each number in the list is called a term.

For example, the sequence of odd numbers:

Term Number (n) Term (Tn)
1 1
2 3
3 5
4 7

Sequences are mainly of two types:

  • Arithmetic Sequence (A.P.): Each term is obtained by adding a fixed number called the common difference (d) to the previous term.
  • Geometric Sequence (G.P.): Each term is obtained by multiplying the previous term by a fixed number called the common ratio (r).

Example of Arithmetic Sequence: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, ... (Here, d = 3)

Example of Geometric Sequence: 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, ... (Here, r = 2)

3) Key Formulas / Rules

Arithmetic Progression (A.P.)
  • General term: Tn = a + (n - 1)d
  • Sum of first n terms: Sn = (n/2) × [2a + (n - 1)d]
Geometric Progression (G.P.)
  • General term: Tn = a × rn-1
  • Sum of first n terms (if r ≠ 1): Sn = a × (rn - 1) / (r - 1)

Where,

  • a = first term
  • d = common difference (for A.P.)
  • r = common ratio (for G.P.)
  • n = term number

4) Did You Know?

In ancient India, the famous mathematician Pingala (around 200 BCE) studied sequences while exploring patterns in Sanskrit poetry. The Fibonacci sequence, which appears in nature (like the arrangement of leaves or petals), was also known to Indian scholars centuries before it was popularized in Europe!

5) Exam Tips — Score High by Avoiding These Mistakes

  • Always identify the type of sequence before applying formulas. Check if the difference or ratio is constant.
  • Remember the sign of common difference or ratio: Negative values are possible (e.g., -2, -4, -6 in A.P.).
  • Write the general term formula carefully: Mixing up ‘+’ and ‘−’ signs leads to wrong answers.
  • When finding sum, don’t forget the formula’s denominator: For G.P., ensure r ≠ 1.
  • Practice problems with Indian contexts: Like saving money monthly, arranging festival lamps, or planting trees in rows.
  • Board Exam Pattern: Questions may ask for the nth term, sum of n terms, or to find missing terms in sequences.

Sequences — Mnemonic

Mnemonic 1: "AP, GP, HP – A Fun Trip!" 🚂

To remember the three main types of sequences:

  • AP – Arithmetic Progression (Difference is constant)
  • GP – Geometric Progression (Ratio is constant)
  • HP – Harmonic Progression (Reciprocals form an AP)

Hindi rhyme to recall: "Aloo, Gajar, Hari Mirch – AP, GP, HP!" 🥔🥕🌶️

This fun phrase links common Indian veggies to sequence types for easy recall.

Mnemonic 2: "D.R.R. – Difference, Ratio, Reciprocate!" 🔢

To remember how to identify sequences:

  • D = Check Difference for AP
  • R = Check Ratio for GP
  • R = Check Reciprocals for HP (then difference)

Hindi phrase: "Dost Raat Roti" 🍽️ – Just like friends sharing dinner, check Difference, Ratio, Reciprocals in order!

Mnemonic 3: "S.N.A.P. – Sequence Numbers Always Progress!" 📈

To remember the formula for the nth term of AP and GP:

  • S – Start with first term (a)
  • N – Number of terms (n)
  • A – Add (for AP) or multiply (for GP)
  • P – Progress accordingly

Hindi twist: "Shubh Naam Aagey Padhta hai" 📚 – Good names move forward, just like terms in sequences!
