Human Physiology — Lesson

1) Hook — A Real-Life Story to Grab Attention

Imagine running a marathon on a hot day in Mumbai. As your heart races and sweat drips down, your body performs a complex symphony of physiological processes to keep you alive and active. Your heart pumps faster, your lungs breathe deeper, and your muscles get the oxygen they desperately need. This remarkable coordination of systems is what we call Human Physiology.

2) Core Concepts — Understanding Human Physiology

Definition: Human Physiology is the branch of biology that deals with the normal functions of the human body and its parts.

Human physiology can be broadly divided into several systems, each performing specific functions but working together harmoniously:

System Primary Function Indian Example
Circulatory System Transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste Adaptation in high-altitude Ladakh residents with increased RBC count
Respiratory System Gas exchange (O2 in, CO2 out) Yoga pranayama practices improving lung capacity
Digestive System Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients Traditional Indian spices aiding digestion (e.g., ginger, turmeric)
Nervous System Controls body responses and coordination Meditation practices enhancing brain function
Excretory System Removes metabolic wastes Hydration habits in hot Indian climates to support kidney function
Important Physiological Processes:
  • Homeostasis: Maintaining internal stability (e.g., body temperature, blood pH)
  • Muscle Contraction: Sliding filament theory involving actin and myosin
  • Neural Transmission: Electrical impulses transmitted via neurons using neurotransmitters
  • Blood Circulation: Double circulation system in humans (pulmonary and systemic)

3) Key Formulas/Rules

Cardiac Output (CO):
CO = Stroke Volume (SV) × Heart Rate (HR)
Where,
SV = volume of blood pumped per beat (ml)
HR = number of heartbeats per minute
Example: If SV = 70 ml and HR = 72 beats/min, then CO = 70 × 72 = 5040 ml/min or 5.04 L/min
Respiratory Minute Volume (RMV):
RMV = Tidal Volume (TV) × Respiratory Rate (RR)
Where,
TV = volume of air inhaled or exhaled per breath (ml)
RR = number of breaths per minute
Example: TV = 500 ml, RR = 15 breaths/min → RMV = 500 × 15 = 7500 ml/min or 7.5 L/min
Blood Pressure (BP):
BP = Cardiac Output (CO) × Peripheral Resistance (PR)
Where,
PR = resistance offered by blood vessels to blood flow

4) Did You Know?

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps to squirt blood up to 9 meters! This incredible force ensures blood reaches even the highest parts of the body, such as the brain. In Indian traditional medicine, the heart is often symbolized as the seat of life and emotion, highlighting its importance beyond physiology.

5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes & Board Exam Patterns

  • Common Mistake: Confusing tidal volume with vital capacity. Remember, tidal volume is the air per normal breath, while vital capacity is the maximum air exhaled after maximum inhalation.
  • Tip: Always label diagrams clearly, especially the heart and nephron, as these are frequently asked.
  • Board Pattern: Questions often include:
    • Short answer questions on system functions (2-3 marks)
    • Diagram-based questions (4-5 marks)
    • Numerical problems on cardiac output and respiratory volume (3-4 marks)
    • Case studies involving homeostasis or physiological disorders
  • Preparation Strategy: Practice drawing and labeling the circulatory and respiratory systems. Use Indian examples to relate concepts for better retention.
