1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention

Imagine you are at a cricket match in Mumbai. The scoreboard shows that India scored 320 runs in 50 overs. Your friend says, "Did you know that the batsman scored 25% of the team's total runs?" You wonder, how many runs did the batsman score? This is where percentages come into play! Understanding percentages helps you quickly find parts of a whole — like runs scored, discounts during Diwali sales, or even how much of your exam you have completed!

2) Core Concepts — What Are Percentages?

A percentage is a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. The word “percent” means “per hundred.” It is written using the symbol %.

For example:

  • 25% means 25 out of 100, or 25/100
  • 50% means 50 out of 100, or 50/100

Percentages help us compare numbers easily. Let’s see some examples:

Example Explanation
If 40% of students in a class of 50 like cricket, how many students is that? 40% of 50 = (40/100) × 50 = 20 students
A Bollywood movie earned ₹200 crore, and 30% of the earnings came from Mumbai. How much did Mumbai contribute? 30% of ₹200 crore = (30/100) × 200 = ₹60 crore

3) Key Formulas / Rules

To find the percentage of a number:

Percentage (%) × Total Number ÷ 100

Example: Find 15% of 80 → (15 × 80) ÷ 100 = 12

To convert a fraction or decimal to percentage:

Multiply by 100 and add the % sign

Example: 0.75 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%

To convert a percentage to decimal:

Divide by 100

Example: 40% = 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4

4) Did You Know?

In cricket, batting averages and strike rates are often expressed as percentages or decimals! For example, a strike rate of 150 means the batsman scores 150 runs per 100 balls, which is the same as 150%. This helps commentators quickly compare players’ performances.

5) Exam Tips — Avoid These Common Mistakes!

  • Don’t forget to convert percentages into decimals or fractions before multiplying.
  • Remember the difference between percentage and percentage points. For example, going from 20% to 30% is a 10 percentage point increase, but a 50% increase in value.
  • Watch out for tricky questions where the total changes after a percentage increase or decrease (like price hikes during festivals).
  • Practice word problems carefully — read them twice and identify what is the “whole” and what part you need to find.
  • Board exams often ask you to calculate percentages in real-life contexts like discounts, profit/loss, or population statistics.

Remember, percentages are everywhere — from your cricket scores to your favourite Bollywood box office collections and even your school exam results! Mastering this topic will make you a math champ!

Percentages — Mnemonic

Mnemonic 1: P.E.R.C.E.N.T 🏏

Think of "PERCENT" as your cricket team’s secret code to score big in math!

  • P - Part (जितना हिस्सा)
  • E - Entire (पूरा)
  • R - Ratio (अनुपात)
  • C - Convert to fraction (भिन्न में बदलो)
  • E - Express as hundred (सौ में व्यक्त करो)
  • N - Number (संख्या)
  • T - Total (कुल)

Just like a cricket score, percentage tells you how much out of 100 your part is! 🏏📊

Mnemonic 2: "पचास का पक्का फार्मूला" 🎬

Remember this Bollywood-style rhyme to never forget percentage basics:

“पचास का पक्का फार्मूला, भाग दो भाग को पूरा,
फिर सौ से गुणा करो, मिलेगा प्रतिशत का जोड़ा!”

(Divide the part by the whole, multiply by 100, and you get the percentage!)

Mnemonic 3: "Percent = Part over Whole × 100" with a Fun Twist 🎉

Imagine you have 100 ladoos 🍬 for a festival:

  • If you eat 25 ladoos, what’s your percentage of ladoos eaten?
  • Use the formula: Percent = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100
  • So, Percent = (25 ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%

Easy as eating ladoos at Diwali! 🍬🎉
