Factors and Multiples — Lesson

🌟 Let's Discover Factors and Multiples! 🌟

Imagine you have 12 ladoos 🍬 to share equally among your friends at a Diwali party. You want to make sure everyone gets the same number of ladoos, and none are left over. How many friends can you invite so that the ladoos are shared perfectly?

This is where Factors and Multiples help us! Let's find out how!

1) What are Factors?

A factor of a number is a number that divides it exactly without leaving any remainder.

For example, factors of 12 are numbers that divide 12 perfectly:

Number Does it divide 12 exactly? Result
1 Yes (12 ÷ 1 = 12) Factor
2 Yes (12 ÷ 2 = 6) Factor
3 Yes (12 ÷ 3 = 4) Factor
4 Yes (12 ÷ 4 = 3) Factor
5 No (12 ÷ 5 = 2 remainder 2) Not a Factor
6 Yes (12 ÷ 6 = 2) Factor
12 Yes (12 ÷ 12 = 1) Factor

So, factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

2) What are Multiples?

A multiple of a number is what you get when you multiply that number by any whole number.

For example, multiples of 4 are:

4 × 1 4 × 2 4 × 3 4 × 4 4 × 5
4 8 12 16 20

So, multiples of 4 are: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and so on...

3) Key Formulas and Rules

✔️ A number a is a factor of b if b ÷ a leaves no remainder.

✔️ A number m is a multiple of n if m = n × k, where k is a whole number.

✔️ Every number is a factor of itself and 1 is a factor of every number.

4) Did You Know? 🤔

In India, the number 108 is very special! It is considered sacred and appears in many traditions. Guess what? It has many factors and multiples! For example, 108 can be divided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 27, 36, 54, and 108. That's why it's easy to share 108 sweets equally among friends!

5) Exam Tips 📝

  • Check division carefully: Always make sure the division leaves no remainder when finding factors.
  • List multiples step-by-step: Multiply the number by 1, 2, 3, and so on, to avoid missing any multiples.
  • Don't confuse factors and multiples: Factors are smaller or equal numbers dividing the number; multiples are bigger or equal numbers made by multiplying.
  • Board exam pattern: You may get questions like "List factors of 24" or "Find first 5 multiples of 7". Sometimes, word problems about sharing sweets or arranging flowers will test your understanding!

🎉 Now you are ready to find factors and multiples everywhere! Happy learning! 🎉
