Fractions — Lesson
🍉 Let's Share the Watermelon! 🍉
Imagine you have a big, juicy watermelon 🍉. You want to share it equally with your 3 friends. How do you cut it so everyone gets the same amount? This is where fractions help us! Fractions tell us about parts of a whole. Let's learn how to use them!
What are Fractions?
A fraction shows how many parts of a whole we have. It has two numbers:
- Numerator (top number) – tells how many parts we have.
- Denominator (bottom number) – tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Example: If you cut the watermelon into 4 equal parts and eat 1 part, you ate 1/4 of the watermelon!
Visual Table: Fractions of a Whole
| Fraction | Meaning | Picture |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | One half (2 equal parts) | 🟠🟠 🟠⚪ |
| 1/3 | One third (3 equal parts) | 🟢🟢🟢 🟢⚪⚪ |
| 3/4 | Three fourths (4 equal parts) | 🔵🔵🔵⚪ |
Key Rules About Fractions
Rule 1: The denominator tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Rule 2: The numerator tells how many parts we are talking about.
Rule 3: The numerator is always less than or equal to the denominator.
Did You Know? 🤔
Fractions have been used for thousands of years! Ancient Indians used fractions in their math long ago. The famous mathematician Aryabhata wrote about fractions in his book over 1500 years ago! 📜✨
Exam Tips ✔️
- Always check if the fraction is in the simplest form.
- Remember, denominator cannot be zero!
- When drawing fractions, divide the shape into equal parts carefully.
- Practice questions with real-life objects like pizza slices 🍕 or laddus 🪔 to understand better.
- Board exam often asks to identify numerator and denominator or color parts of a shape.
