Simple Equations — Lesson
1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention
Imagine you are watching an intense cricket match between India and Australia. The commentator says, "India needs 50 runs from 10 balls, and Virat Kohli has already scored some runs. How many runs does he need to score in the next 10 balls to win?" Here, if we know the runs Virat has already scored, we can find out the runs he still needs by solving a simple equation! Simple equations help us find unknown values, just like solving cricket puzzles.
2) Core Concepts — What Are Simple Equations?
A simple equation is a mathematical statement that shows two expressions are equal and contains an unknown value, usually represented by a letter like x or y. Our job is to find the value of this unknown.
Example 1:
x + 7 = 15
Here, x is unknown. What number plus 7 equals 15?
To find x, subtract 7 from both sides:
x + 7 = 15
x + 7 − 7 = 15 − 7
x = 8
So, x = 8. This means 8 + 7 = 15, which is true.
Example 2:
5x = 35
What number multiplied by 5 gives 35?
Divide both sides by 5:
5x = 35
(5x) ÷ 5 = 35 ÷ 5
x = 7
3) Key Formulas/Rules
- Rule 1: To isolate the variable, perform the same operation on both sides of the equation.
- Rule 2: Use inverse operations to "undo" addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
- Rule 3: Addition ↔ Subtraction and Multiplication ↔ Division are inverse operations.
4) Did You Know?
The concept of using symbols for unknowns in equations was popularized by Indian mathematician Brahmagupta around the 7th century! He used clever methods to solve equations that look a lot like what we do today.
5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes and Board Exam Patterns
- Tip 1: Always perform the same operation on both sides to keep the equation balanced.
- Tip 2: Watch out for signs (+ or −). For example, subtracting a negative number is like adding.
- Tip 3: Check your answer by substituting the value back into the original equation.
- Tip 4: Board exams often ask you to solve for x in one-step or two-step equations, so practice both types.
- Tip 5: Write steps clearly; partial marks are given for correct methods.

Simple Equations — Mnemonic
Mnemonic 1: "BALANCE का RULE" ⚖️
- Balance both sides
- Add or subtract equally
- Look for the variable
- Always keep equation simple
- Numbers move opposite sign
- Calculate carefully
- Ensure answer fits
Hindi phrase to remember: "Dono taraf barabar, tabhi milega jawab sahi yaar!" ⚖️😊
Mnemonic 2: "X को पकड़ो, बाकी हटाओ" 🎯
- X (variable) को पकड़ो (isolate)
- +/- को हटाओ (move constants)
- ×/÷ को पलटाओ (do inverse operation)
