Data Handling — Lesson
1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention
Imagine the famous Indian cricket team just played a thrilling Test match against Australia. After the match, the coach wants to analyze how many runs each player scored in the last 5 matches to decide the best batsman for the upcoming series. To do this, he collects data on runs scored by each player and organizes it neatly. This process of collecting, organizing, and interpreting information is called Data Handling. Just like the coach, statisticians, scientists, and even Bollywood producers use data handling to make smart decisions!
2) Core Concepts — What is Data Handling?
Data Handling is the process of:
- Collecting data (information)
- Organizing it in tables or charts
- Representing it visually (like graphs)
- Interpreting or analyzing the data to make decisions
Example: Suppose a Bollywood director wants to know which movie genre is most popular among teenagers in Mumbai. He surveys 50 teenagers and records their favourite genre.
| Genre | Number of Teenagers |
|---|---|
| Action | 15 |
| Romance | 20 |
| Comedy | 10 |
| Drama | 5 |
From this table, the director can see that Romance is the most popular genre among teenagers surveyed.
3) Key Formulas / Rules
Mean (Average):
Mean = (Sum of all observations) ÷ (Number of observations)
Example: Runs scored by a batsman in 5 matches: 40, 55, 30, 70, 65
Mean = (40 + 55 + 30 + 70 + 65) ÷ 5 = 260 ÷ 5 = 52 runs
Median:
The middle value when data is arranged in ascending order.
Example: Marks scored: 45, 60, 55, 70, 65
Arrange: 45, 55, 60, 65, 70 → Median = 60
Mode:
The value that appears most frequently.
Example: Number of goals scored by a football player in matches: 2, 3, 3, 1, 4
Mode = 3 (since 3 appears twice)
4) Did You Know?
The first-ever census in India was conducted in 1872 during British rule, collecting data about the population. Today, India conducts a census every 10 years, collecting data on millions of people — making it one of the largest data handling exercises in the world! This data helps the government plan everything from schools to railways.
5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes & Board Exam Patterns
- Always arrange data in ascending order before finding median.
- Double-check calculations when finding mean — small mistakes add up!
- Read questions carefully: Sometimes mode or median is asked, not mean.
- Practice drawing tables and bar graphs neatly — marks are given for presentation.
- Board exam pattern: Questions often include:
- Organizing raw data into tables
- Finding mean, median, and mode
- Interpreting data from bar graphs or pictographs
- Time management: Spend 5 minutes organizing data before calculations.

Data Handling — Mnemonic
Mnemonic 1: 📊 DATA Handling Steps - "C.O.P.S."
- C - Collect the data
- O - Organize it (डेटा को टेबल या ग्राफ में सजाना)
- P - Present with charts
- S - Study and interpret
याद रखो: C.O.P.S. 🚓📈
Mnemonic 2: 🎯 "R.I.P. Data" for Types of Data
- R - Raw Data (कच्चा डेटा, जैसे स्कूल की उपस्थिति की लिस्ट)
- I - Information (संगठित और समझने योग्य डेटा)
- P - Processed Data (डेटा को ग्राफ या सारणी में बदला)
Mnemonic 3: 🔢 Frequency Table - "गिनो और दिखाओ"
- गिनो = Count the number of times (फ्रीक्वेंसी)
- दिखाओ = Show in table/chart (तालिका या चार्ट में दिखाओ)
