1) Hook — A Fun Real-Life Story to Grab Attention

Imagine you and your friends are at a cricket match in Mumbai. During the break, you decide to share a delicious rasgulla cake equally among 8 friends. The cake is cut into 8 equal slices. If you eat 3 slices, what fraction of the cake have you eaten? And how much is left for your friends?

This simple sharing story introduces us to fractions, which help us describe parts of a whole — just like parts of your rasgulla cake!

2) Core Concepts — Understanding Fractions with Examples

A fraction represents a part of a whole or a collection. It is written as numerator over denominator, separated by a line:

Fraction = Numerator / Denominator

  • Numerator (top number): Number of parts we have or are interested in.
  • Denominator (bottom number): Total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.

Example 1: The rasgulla cake cut into 8 slices, you ate 3 slices, so the fraction eaten is 3/8.

Visual Table: Rasgulla Cake Slices

Slice Number Status
1 Eaten
2 Eaten
3 Eaten
4 Left
5 Left
6 Left
7 Left
8 Left

The fraction of the cake left is 5/8 because 5 slices remain uneaten.

Example 2: If a Bollywood movie runs for 3 hours and you watch only 1 hour, the fraction of the movie you watched is 1/3.

3) Key Formulas / Rules

Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator:
a/b + c/b = (a + c)/b

Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator:
a/b - c/b = (a - c)/b

Multiplying Fractions:
(a/b) × (c/d) = (a × c) / (b × d)

Dividing Fractions:
(a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c) = (a × d) / (b × c)

Equivalent Fractions:
a/b = (a × k) / (b × k), where k is any non-zero number

4) Did You Know?

In ancient India, mathematicians like Pingala and Brahmagupta studied fractions and zero long before many other parts of the world! Fractions were used in Indian astronomy and architecture, including the design of temples and palaces.

Also, the famous Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar once said that understanding fractions helped him calculate his batting averages and strike rates quickly during matches!

5) Exam Tips — Common Mistakes and Board Exam Patterns

  • Always simplify fractions to their lowest terms before final answers. For example, 6/8 should be simplified to 3/4.
  • Pay attention to denominators: When adding or subtracting, denominators must be the same. Find the least common denominator (LCD) if they differ.
  • Remember to invert the second fraction when dividing fractions (multiply by reciprocal).
  • Practice word problems: Board exams often ask real-life questions involving fractions, such as sharing sweets, measuring ingredients, or time calculations.
  • Draw diagrams or use tables to visualize fractions — this helps avoid errors and impresses examiners.

Sample Board Question:

A pizza is cut into 12 equal slices. If Raju ate 5 slices and his sister ate 3 slices, what fraction of the pizza was eaten? What fraction remains?

Solution: Fraction eaten = (5 + 3)/12 = 8/12 = 2/3 (after simplification)

Fraction remaining = 1 - 2/3 = 1/3

Mnemonic 1: FRACTION Fun with Cricket 🎉🏏

“FRACTION” stands for:

  • For the Numerator (Top number) – Think “Fielder” who is on top, catching the ball!
  • Remember the Denominator (Bottom number) – The “Run” scored on the ground below!
  • ACTION – To add or subtract, make denominators equal first, like teammates coordinating!

So, in fractions, the top is the fielder catching (numerator), and the bottom is the runs on the ground (denominator). Easy peasy! 🏏

Mnemonic 2: Hindi Rhymes for Fractions 🇮🇳📚

“अंश ऊपर, हर नीचे, भाग बताता है सही”

(Ansh upar, har neeche, bhaag batata hai sahi)

Translation: The numerator is on top, denominator below, the fraction tells the part you know!

This rhyme helps you remember that the अंश (Ansh) or numerator is always ऊपर (on top), and the हर (Har) or denominator is always नीचे (below).

Mnemonic 3: FUN Acronym for Fractions 🥳

  • Fraction = First number (Numerator)
  • Underneath = Denominator (the number under the line)
  • Number tells the part you have!

Remember: F-U-N makes fractions easy and fun! 🎉
