Active and Passive — Lesson
🚀 Let's Learn Active and Passive Voice! 🚀
1) Hook: A Fun Story! 🐶🎾
One sunny day, Riya threw a ball to her dog, Bruno. Bruno caught the ball happily and brought it back. Let's see how we can tell this story in two ways:
- Active Voice: Riya threw the ball.
- Passive Voice: The ball was thrown by Riya.
Isn't that interesting? We can say the same thing in two different ways!
2) Core Concepts: What are Active and Passive Voices?
Active Voice: The subject does the action.
Passive Voice: The subject receives the action.
| Active Voice | Passive Voice |
|---|---|
| The teacher teaches the students. | The students are taught by the teacher. |
| The gardener waters the plants. | The plants are watered by the gardener. |
| My mother cooked the meal. | The meal was cooked by my mother. |
3) Key Formulas / Rules
Subject + Verb + Object
Example: Ravi plays cricket.
Object + to be verb + Past Participle + by + Subject
Example: Cricket is played by Ravi.
Remember: The to be verb changes with the tense:
- Present Simple: is / am / are
- Past Simple: was / were
- Future Simple: will be
4) Did You Know? 🤔
In Hindi, we also use active and passive sentences! For example:
- Active: राम ने आम खाया। (Ram ate the mango.)
- Passive: आम राम द्वारा खाया गया। (The mango was eaten by Ram.)
So, learning active and passive voice helps you understand many languages better!
5) Exam Tips ✔️
- Always identify the subject and object first.
- Use the correct to be verb for the tense in passive voice.
- Don't forget to add "by" before the subject in passive sentences.
- Practice changing simple active sentences to passive and vice versa.
- Board exams often ask you to rewrite sentences from active to passive or fill in blanks with correct passive forms.
Common Mistake: Writing passive voice without "by" or wrong verb forms.
