Verbs - Tenses — Lesson
🌟 Let's Travel Through Time with Verbs! 🌟
Once upon a time in a small Indian village, little Raju loved playing cricket. Yesterday, he played with his friends. Today, he is playing in the park. And tomorrow, he will play in the school tournament! Can you see how the words played, is playing, and will play tell us when the action happens? These special words are called verbs in different tenses!
What Are Verbs and Tenses?
A verb is an action word. It tells us what someone or something does.
Example: run, eat, sing, play.
Tense tells us when the action happens. There are three main tenses:
| Tense | When? | Example Verb | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present Tense | Now / Every day | play | Raju plays cricket. |
| Past Tense | Before now | played | Raju played yesterday. |
| Future Tense | After now | will play | Raju will play tomorrow. |
- Present tense: Use the base verb or add -s or -es for he/she/it.
- Past tense: Usually add -ed to the verb (for regular verbs).
- Future tense: Use will + base verb.
Did You Know? 🤔
The word tense comes from a Latin word tempus which means time. So, tenses help us travel through time with our words! 🕰️
Exam Tips ✔️
- Watch out for spelling: For verbs ending in e, just add d in past tense (e.g., love → loved).
- He/She/It in present tense: Always add -s or -es (e.g., She runs, He watches).
- Future tense always uses will: Don’t forget the word will before the verb.
- Practice writing sentences: The board exam may ask you to write or identify tenses in sentences.
Keep practicing, and soon you will be a tense master! 🎉
