Fractions — Lesson
🍉 Let's Share the Watermelon! 🍉
Imagine you and your 3 friends bought a big, juicy watermelon at the market. You want to share it equally. How can you do that? 🤔 You cut the watermelon into 4 equal pieces. Each friend gets one piece. Each piece is called a fraction of the whole watermelon.
What are Fractions? 🍽️
A fraction shows a part of a whole thing. It has two numbers:
- Numerator (top number): tells how many parts we have.
- Denominator (bottom number): tells into how many equal parts the whole is divided.
For example: If the watermelon is cut into 4 parts and you have 1 part, the fraction is 1/4.
| Fraction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | One part out of two equal parts | Half of a roti 🍞 |
| 3/4 | Three parts out of four equal parts | 3 slices of a pizza 🍕 cut into 4 |
| 2/5 | Two parts out of five equal parts | 2 laddoos 🍬 out of 5 equal pieces |
Fraction = Numerator ÷ Denominator
The numerator must always be less than or equal to the denominator when showing parts of a whole.
Did You Know? 🤓
The word "fraction" comes from the Latin word fractio, which means "to break." So fractions are all about breaking things into parts! In India, we often share sweets like barfis and peda in fractions during festivals. 🍬🎉
Exam Tips 📝
- Always check if the parts are equal before writing a fraction.
- Remember: numerator is on top, denominator is at the bottom.
- Don't confuse fractions with decimals — fractions have a line between two numbers.
- Practice drawing shapes and shading parts to show fractions clearly.
- Board exams often ask you to write fractions for pictures or share items equally.
Good luck! Sharing is caring, and fractions help us share fairly! 😊
